Montgomorie Vs. Love

Compiled From Wire Services

Colin Montgomerie broke the match-play mastery of Ernie Els, while reigning PGA champion Davis Love III had an unexpected struggle.

Love needed an 18th-hole birdie putt to avoid a late collapse and beat unheralded Hajime Meshiai 1-up in the semifinals of the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf.

Meanwhile, Montgomerie - 1-3-1 in previous match-play events against Els - beat the two-time U.S. Open champion 3 and 2 by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Montgomerie, the European champ from Scotland, will play Love, the United States section champ, in a 36-hole match today for the $1 million prize.
