Civic activist Dennis L. Ashlock, a longtime member of the Whitman College board of overseers, died Tuesday at the age of 59.

Warren Mehrtens, one of only 11 jockeys to ever ride to a Triple Crown, died Monday. He was 77.

The Rev. Maurice McCrackin, arrested and jailed dozens of times during more than 40 years of civil rights and peace activism, died Tuesday at age 92.

Johnny Coles, a trumpeter and fluegelhornist who illuminated some of the best jazz groups of the 1950s and ‘60s with his warm, soft sound, died on Dec. 21 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He was 71.

DECISIONS

New U.S. Department of Agriculture Department rules prohibit food processors from selling raw poultry as “fresh” if it has ever been chilled below 27 degrees Fahrenheit.
