Sixties veteran Bob Dylan, who made a strong comeback last year with his “Time Out of Mind” album, and his son, Wallflowers lead singer Jakob Dylan, were each nominated for three Grammy Awards on Tuesday.

The televised Grammy Awards ceremony will be held in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 25, with “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer as host.

For the second straight year, the versatile Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds earned the most nominations, with eight. Babyface won three awards after being nominated 12 times last year.

Rap impresario Puff Daddy and singer Paula Cole, whose plaintive “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone” was nominated for song and record of the year, had seven nominations apiece. R. Kelly and newcomer Erykah Badu each were nominated for five awards.

Elton John’s moving eulogy to Princess Diana, “Candle in the Wind 1997,” the best-selling single of all time, was nominated for best male pop vocal performance. He’ll compete with Babyface, Maxwell, Seal and Duncan Sheik.

Bob Dylan, who recently received Kennedy Center honors for his work, was nominated for best album and best contemporary folk album. He was also nominated for best rock vocal performance for “Cold Irons Bound.”

But it was Jakob who was feted for his songwriting: “The Difference” and “One Headlight,” two songs that Jakob wrote and sung for the Wallflowers, were nominated for best rock song. “One Headlight” was also nominated for best rock performance by a duo or group.

Nominees for record of the year - an award that generally goes to singles - were “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” by Cole; “Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin; “Everyday Is a Winding Road” by Sheryl Crow; “MMMBop” by Hanson; and “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly.

Song of the year nominees included “Don’t Speak,” written by Eric Stefani and Gwen Stefani, performed by No Doubt; “How Do I Live,” written by Diane Warren and performed by both LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood; “I Believe I Can Fly,” performed and written by R. Kelly; “Sunny Came Home,” written by Shawn Colvin and John Leventhal and performed by Colvin; and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?,” written and performed by Cole.

Teen rockers Hanson, Puff Daddy and singers Badu, Cole and Fiona Apple will compete for best new artist.

Bob Dylan will compete with another ‘60s veteran, Paul McCartney, for album of the year. McCartney’s “Flaming Pie” was nominated along with “The Day” by Babyface, “This Fire” by Cole and “OK Computer” by Radiohead.

“Mo Money Mo Problems,” a song by the late rapper The Notorious B.I.G. with Mase and Puff Daddy, will compete for a best rap performance Grammy against “I’ll Be Missing You,” the best-selling single by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, featuring 112, that memorialized his death.

The Grammys introduced a category for best dance recording this year. Initial nominees included Daft Punk, Gina G, Pet Shop Boys, Quad City DJ’s and Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder.

Grammy voters will finally decide which version of “How Do I Live” is the best. Rimes and Yearwood were both nominated for best female country vocal performance for their versions of the song.

The late newsman Charles Kuralt received two Grammy nominations for spoken word albums. In one category he will compete against former colleague Walter Cronkite.

The late conductor Sir Georg Solti, the most honored Grammy artist ever with 30 awards, received two more nominations this year for classical performances.

The omnipresent Spice Girls were shut out of the nominations.
