Man Denies Killing 10-Week-Old Son

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Soap Lake man accused of killing his 10-week-old son has pleaded innocent to a charge of first-degree manslaughter.

Grant County Superior Court Judge Ken Jorgensen scheduled a Feb. 18 trial for Jared Kemp, 19. He is being held in the Grant County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Kemp entered his plea Monday.

The infant, Mark A. Kemp, was not breathing when his parents called for an ambulance Dec. 19.

An autopsy showed fractures to the infant’s ribs, some of which had started to heal. Kemp told authorities that he squeezed the infant around the rib cage in an attempt to make him stop crying, court documents indicate.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

The baby’s mother, Rebecca Kemp, 18, also of Soap Lake, is being held in jail as a material witness.
