Other Bears Step Forward In Major Win

GSL girls

It’s no secret the Central Valley girls basketball team belongs to Rikki Jackson.

The bad news for the rest of the Greater Spokane League is that she’s sharing it.

Jackson scored 18 points with her usual complement of near-NBA 3-pointers, but juniors Marisa Liepman and Courtney Phinney had career games as the No. 5 Bears whipped Mead 65-53 Tuesday night at CV.

Liepman had nine of her 23 points in the first quarter as CV grabbed the lead and Phinney all 11 of her points in the second half as the Bears (6-1 overall, 4-1 GSL) dealt the Panthers (4-3, 4-1) their first GSL loss.

Liepman became the first player other than Jackson to lead CV in scoring.

“I knew I had to take it up strong,” the 5-foot-10 Liepman said. “(Mead’s) Allie Bailey is taller, and I got great passes from Rikki. I took it to the hoop because I knew they’d foul. I got a lot of free throws.”

Liepman made 9 of 11 from the line to easily surpass her previous high of 11 points.

While Liepman was steady, Phinney, a 5-foot sparkplug, was spectacular.

Her first basket came off an offensive rebound underneath. She made two free throws late in the third quarter to put CV up 45-32. The Panthers closed the quarter with a 3 from Shannon Leaf and an inside bucket by Brandi Curry.

Opening the fourth quarter, Danielle Zelinski stole the ball for a layup and added a 3-pointer from the left wing after another CV turnover to make it 45-42.

Liepman promptly converted a three-point play, and Phinney made a pair of foul shots. After a Curry basket, Phinney hit a 3, Jackson fed Liepman and the Bears had regained a comfortable lead.

“Everyone is disappointed,” Mead coach Beth Wing said. “Our girls have high expectations. You have to handle pressure and you have to hit some shots.”

Pressure particularly killed the Panthers. CV’s press forced 16 turnovers good for 15 points in the first half, and 24 for the game.

Phinney was all over the court harassing the Panthers.

“Defense is what I concentrate on,” Phinney said. “I don’t have a height advantage, so I have to hustle my butt off and whatever happens, happens.”

Bailey scored 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting before fouling out. Curry had 12 points and Zelinski 10, all in the fourth quarter.
