Lake City Keeps Up Winning Ways Against Cda

Justin Rufus Correspondent

Lake City kept its winning streak alive in a 59-32 win over crosstown rival Coeur d’Alene in a Border League girls basketball game Thursday night at Coeur d’Alene.

The win was the ninth straight for the Timberwolves against the Vikings since Lake City opened just four years ago.

The A-1’s top-ranked T-Wolves moved to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in league and dropped the Vikings to 3-9, 2-6.

The T-Wolves came out in the first quarter with accurate shooting against the 2-3 zone defense of the Vikings. Lindsay Herbert missed only one shot from the field and scored 10 of the T-Wolves’ 19 points in the first. Herbert ended the first quarter with eight unanswered points. In contrast, the Viks scored just 10 points in the first. Herbert ended the game with a game-high 23 points. Teammate Laura Dodge had 10.

The Vikings stepped up their play in the second period and took advantage of several turnovers by the T-Wolves, allowing 11 points. The offense got hot, too, shooting its best of the night to pull within 10 at halftime.

“We played hard the first half but we just weren’t able to maintain … Lake City is a great team, they’re undefeated and experienced,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Bill Pratt. “We’re young kids.”

A fourth-quarter burst of 13 unanswered points by the T-Wolves wrapped up the blowout for the visitors. The Viks could only manage to score two points against the late-game zone defense of the hustling T-Wolves.

“I am pleased. Some games we just aren’t able to play hard all four quarters, and tonight we did. We had a solid performance,” Lake City coach Dave Stockwell said.

The Vikings have suffered many injuries this season, including 6-foot sophomore Katie Shirley, who is out for the season with a dislocated shoulder. Pratt said his players are continually being sidelined by injury.

“It’s like a revolving door this season,” Pratt said.
