Teaching Program Launched At UI With Endowment

The University of Idaho has selected the first three faculty fellows to participate in the new Excellence in Teaching the Humanities program.

The program is funded by an endowment of more than $1.5 million from private donations and a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Katherine Aiken, professor of history, David Lee-Painter, assistant professor of theater arts, and Gary Williams, professor of English will share the honor.

During their three-semester fellowship they will work with faculty to extend learning opportunities for students, strengthen curriculum and invigorate teaching across the humanities discipline.

They will also plan the 1998-99 Lester and Agnes Schuldt Faculty Seminar, weeklong summer workshops for faculty from history, art, English, foreign languages, music, philosophy and theater disciplines to enhance teaching and learning.

The fellows will also assist departments in recruiting nationally recognized visiting scholars to interact with students and faculty.

Area students have received the University of Idaho Alumni Award for Excellence in recognition of scholarship and activities and represent the top 1.6 percent of all seniors and maintain a grade-point average of 3.84. Students are listed by hometown.

Moscow: Tanya Atwood-Hoover, a sociology/anthropology major; Linda Chou, a metallurgical engineering major; and Catherine Mabbutt, a political science major. Potlatch: Kimberly Vowell, an elementary education major.

Stacie Lynn Ferger, a senior retail management major at Purdue University in Indiana and daughter of Marvin and Susan Davis of Rathdrum, Idaho, recently received the $2,000 Nancy Creech Neubert Scholarship.

Recipients are eligible for this scholarship if they are a U.S. citizen in financial need and exhibit high academic standing.
