Willamette offensive coordinator Mark Speckman was named the school’s new head football coach. Speckman replaces Dan Hawkins, who left to become the assistant head coach at Boise State.

Lia Manoliu, an Olympic gold medal winner in the discus in 1968, who competed in six Games, died in Bucharest, Romania, of a heart attack. She was 65.
