Nightwalk Ministries Will Offer Training

People with good listening skills, an ability to articulate their faith and a desire to reach out to young runaways as well as drug and alcohol abusers are invited to attend training sessions for Nightwalk Ministries, sponsored by the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries.

As the group’s name implies, members walk the downtown area at night, trying to connect with those who live on the streets.

Three training sessions, led by the Rev. John Olson, will be from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 and 29 - at the Grace Lutheran Parish House, 1905 E. Grace.

Training will include personal-story listening, behavior description, suicide prevention and verbal self-defense.

Pastors’ retreat scheduled

Spokane-area ministers are invited to attend the Pastors’ Prayer Retreat, sponsored by the Greater Spokane Association of Evangelicals, Jan. 20 and 21, at Riverview Bible Camp.

Cost is $25, which includes meals and overnight accommodations. Participants will meet at Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard, at 8 a.m. Jan. 20 and travel by bus to the camp. The retreat ends at 3 p.m. the next day.

Discipleship topic

“Discipleship for a Confessing Church in a Post-Modern Age” is the theme of lectures for clergy and lay people from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 1 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 24th and Grand Boulevard.

Speakers will be Gerhard Forde, professor of systematic theology at Luther Seminary, and Timothy Lull, president of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.

Forde will discuss “Reclaiming the Basics: The Disciple in the Post-Modern Age.” Lull will address “Encountering the World: Community in the Post-Christendom Era.”

Cost is $20 if registration is completed before Thursday. Late registration is $25.

Women’s retreat planned

A one-day women’s retreat, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday at 4224 E. Fourth, will be hosted by Dorcas Ministry of Spokane.

The program will include the music of Juline Trimborn and speakers Edie Sevy, the Rev. Cynthia Steele, “Jonnie” Jones, and Mary McDowell.

Cost is $10 at the door.
