Arizona Finds That Look, Buries Huskies

If Arizona’s performance in Seattle is any barometer, the Wildcats have a good chance of winning their second straight NCAA title.

“Oh, yeah,” Washington coach Bob Bender said when asked about the Wildcats’ chances of repeating in March. “This team is tremendous. When they play like this, there’s not a better team in college basketball.”

Led by Michael Dickerson’s 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and Mike Bibby’s 20, the fifth-ranked Wildcats rolled over Washington 110-91 Saturday.

Arizona led by 20 points at halftime and by 34 twice in the second half. Miles Simon added 18 points for Arizona, which lost 92-88 in Seattle last Feb. 2 before going on to win the NCAA championship.

The Wildcats broke the 100-point barrier for the third time this season as they had 125 against Kansas State and 115 against Morgan State. They’re averaging 95.1 points compared with their scoring average of 83.8 last season.

Donald Watts had a career-high 28 points and Deon Luton tied his career best with 25 for Washington. Luton had five 3-pointers.

Freshman Baron Davis scored on a fastbreak layup with 25 seconds to go as the Bruins defeated the Ducks despite blowing a 20-point lead at home.

J.R. Henderson, who missed a large stretch of the game after getting hit in the right eye by Oregon’s Henry Madden midway through the first half, made a hook shot to tie the game at 66 with 1:03 remaining.

Davis then flicked the ball away from Yasir Rosemond, broke away and got it to freshman Earl Watson, who then found Davis for the go-ahead layup with 25 seconds left. It was Davis’ only points of the second half.

Arthur Lee had 18 points and Tim Young added 16 as the Cardinal defeated the visiting Bears.

Kris Weems added 16 points for Stanford, which tied the school record for consecutive season-opening victories and tied a school record by winning its 18th consecutive home game. The Cardinal have not lost at Maples Pavilion since Feb. 22, 1996.

Geno Carlisle had 22 of his 25 points in the second half for California.

Gary Johnson scored 19 points, including a 3-pointer that snapped a 63-63 tie with 4:20 remaining, as Southern California held off Oregon State at Los Angeles.

The Beavers lost their eighth straight conference game, and their 20th consecutive Pac-10 road game.
