Baskerville Keeps Eagles At Bay

Damien Baskerville put together a dream line Saturday night in leading hot-shooting Weber State to a 97-81 Big Sky Conference men’s basketball romp past Eastern Washington in the Dee Events Center.

The junior guard scored 35 points, pulled down eight rebounds, handed out four assists and made five steals as the Wildcats (5-9 overall, 3-1 Big Sky) made the Eagles (8-6, 2-2) settle for a split on their first conference road swing.

“He just played super,” Eastern coach Steve Aggers said of Baskerville. “He probably had as good a night as any individual player has had against us in a long, long time. He did everything. He was the league MVP tonight.”

Baskerville made 12 of 16 field-goal tries and all 10 of his free throws to more than offset a career-best performance by Eastern’s Shannon Taylor, who finished with 27 points.

In his last three games against EWU, Baskerville has 82 points, 27 rebounds, 15 assists and 13 steals.

Weber shot 64.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Eagles 32-18. Andy Jensen scored 16 points for the Wildcats and teammate Alex Fisher added 13.

“We played fairly hard, we just didn’t play well defensively,” Aggers said. “It wasn’t what we did or didn’t do. I think all the credit goes to their team. They played exceptionally well. They really played with great confidence and executed well.”

Eastern will stay on the road this week, traveling to Montana State Thursday night and to Montana on Saturday.
