North Idaho College Women Do A Number On Dixie

The real North Idaho College women’s basketball team showed up Saturday night.

The Cardinals dominated in nearly every facet, whistling past Dixie 90-66 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game at Christianson Gym.

“I won’t rush out of the gym angry tonight,” said a smiling NIC coach Greg Crimp, who made a quick exit Thursday following the Cards’ lackluster 56-51 win over Snow College.

NIC’s vast improvement in 48 hours began at the point and in the post.

Cardinal point guard Tammy Goyne committed a team-high nine turnovers Thursday. But Saturday, Goyne was back to her all-conference level, breaking out for 15 points in the first half before finishing with 20.

Inside, Dowhy was unstoppable as she put up a game-high 21 points and had eight rebounds as NIC improved to 11-2 overall, 3-2 in conference.

The Cards shook off Thursday’s memories quickly in the first half, using separate 10-2 runs to build their biggest lead at 42-30 when Dowhy hit a turnaround baseline jumper with 3:06 left.

Dixie pulled within 43-39 before NIC closed out the half with a Goyne jumper and a putback at the buzzer by Alisha Nater.

The Rebels enjoyed a large rebounding advantage most of the first half before NIC tightened the margin to one by intermission. With a better effort in the second half, the Cards outrebounded Dixie 46-39 for the game.

In the deciding stretch of the second half, NIC outscored Dixie 27-7.

“We were better in several aspects; that was more our team,” Crimp said, citing the efforts of a half-dozen players. “I hope that’s the North Idaho team we have, and I think it is.”

Crimp heaped particular praise on Goyne and Dowhy.

“They set the tone early,” he said.

Three other NIC players reached double figures. Nater and wing Barrie Jensen scored 13 points each, and Becki Huddle, starting in place of injured starter Julie Grohs, added 11.

Grohs was in street clothes after injuring her back during practice Friday. Her playing status is being evaluated daily.
