Sun Devils Put Cougs Away Early

Stephanie Freeman and Leaf Newman combined for 33 first-half points to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to an 80-60 victory over the visiting Washington State Cougars Saturday night in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game at the ASU Student Activity Center.

Jennifer Kerns came off the bench to pace WSU (7-5 overall, 1-2 in conference play) with 16 points, all in the second half.

Alke Dietel and Yvonne Kunze each added 11 points for the Cougars. Freeman took game-high scoring honors with 25 points for ASU (6-7, 2-2), and Newman added 18.

Arizona State led by 21 points at halftime, 46-25. The Cougars never got closer in the second half until the final margin. At one point ASU built its advantage to 31 points, 76-45, with 4:47 to play.

WSU closed out the game with a 15-4 run, led by seven points from Kerns. Cathy McNeely added five points and four steals during the game-ending run that cut the final margin.

“We wanted to win the last four minutes to carry over to next Thursday,” Cougars head coach Harold Rhodes said.

“We needed that effort for the first 36 minutes of the game,” he added, citing sophomore McNeely for her late-game hustle.
