Castillo Seals Win For Mead

GSL boys

Tom Castillo had no interest in overtime.

“As soon as I was fouled, I said I was going to win the game,” the Mead senior said.

Castillo swished two free throws with 4 seconds left to give the Panthers a wild 41-40 win over Rogers in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Tuesday night at Mead.

“I was very confident, I knew I was going to make them,” Castillo said. “Follow through, hand in net, swish.”

Mead (6-3 overall, 5-2 GSL) got the opportunity to steal the game back from Rogers (7-2, 5-2) when Adam Hooper missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw with 14 seconds left. The Panthers took the ball to the front court and called the last timeout of the game with 6 seconds remaining.

The inbounds pass was a lob to Castillo and all the Pirates had to do was foul since they had two to give, but they didn’t get the job done until Castillo was going up for the shot.

Brett Oglesbee, who put Rogers in a position to win with a stunning burst of shooting, never had a chance to get a good shot off at the buzzer.

“That was an emotional roller coaster for a coach,” Mead’s Jim Preston said. “We went from a dire situation to a kid stepping up. That’s a special moment for him. I told him to remember that; you don’t get that chance very often.”

Mead was up 35-29 in the fourth quarter when Oglesbee drove the lane for a short jumper with 3:07 left.

Mead turned the ball over and Oglesbee responded with a 3-pointer from the left wing. After a Mead miss, Oglesbee hit another 3 to put Rogers up 37-35 with 2:28 left.

The Panthers tied the game but Oglesbee swished a 3 from the top of the key to make it 40-37 with 1:48 to go.

Mark Stenersen made a layup at 1:18 to make it a one-point game and from there until Castillo cashed in it was a wild minute of missed opportunities and miscues.

“Well, we should have won it, Rogers coach Rick Mergenthaler said. “The kids played well enough to win. Silly mistakes. You can’t do that in a big game.”
