Go Online For Dish On World Of Soup

Hungry for more bisque banter after reading today’s cover story about Al Yeganeh, the New York City soup maestro made infamous by “Seinfeld”?

If you have Internet access, point your browser to www.geocities.com/NapaValley/6188 and take a tour through the “Soup of the Evening … Beautiful Soup” Web site.

The pet project of Pat Solley, an FBI public-affairs office worker who studied the subject for 10 years, the cybersoup kitchen contains scores of recipes - hot soup, cold soup, meat soup, seafood soup, vegetable soup, main-course soup, side-dish soup, even a “Snow Shoveling Soup for Grownups” that consists solely of beef stock, cinnamon, sugar, lemon and lots of wine.

There’s also plenty of soup lore and trivia, accompanied by rather bizarre black-and-white illustrations (click on “Chowderhead Rock” to check out an animated display of singing soup lovers), as well as a glossary of useful information about soup-friendly foods from artichokes to watercress.

Dynamic duo

Once again, no one from Eastern Washington or North Idaho has been picked to compete in this year’s Pillsbury Bake-Off, with its $1 million grand prize.

But the list of 100 finalists from around the country includes both Bob and Edwina Gadsby of Great Falls, Mont., the prolific cooking contest couple whom we profiled in an IN Food story last summer. They’ll put their culinary skills on the line - Edwina with a cake, Bob in the snack/appetizer category - in the big biennial showdown Feb. 23 in Orlando, Fla.

By the way, Edwina, who also made the Pillsbury finals last time around in 1996, recently added another notch to her knife handle by taking the $4,000 top prize in the Woman’s Day/Steel Packaging Council’s Fashionable Foods Recipe Contest with a Tuscan Tuna and White Bean Bruschetta.

Fudge hounds

If fudge is your specialty, you could win a prize at the Sandpoint Winter Carnival - and help homeless animals in the process.

The Panhandle Animal Shelter is sponsoring a fudge contest as part of the festivities Jan. 24 at the Foster’s Crossing antique mall. Entrants are asked to bring their candy to the mall between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. It will then be sold to the public for 25 cents a square, with the winners decided by a popular vote. (Hint: The more fudge you make, the more votes you might get.)

Proceeds from the fudge sales will be used to support shelter activities. The top three vote-getters will receive ribbons, T-shirts and merchandise prizes. For more information, call (208) 265-7297.
