Clinton Seeks More Transportation Research

President Clinton will increase spending on transportation research in his upcoming budget, Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater said.

“Let me assure you that the president will continue his strong commitment to investing in our transportation infrastructure,” Slater said Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board.

“Also,” he said, “you will be glad to know that the administration will propose close to a 10 percent increase in the current $1 billion for our research and technology programs.”

Slater told the group that prompt approval of a new highway spending bill is an urgent priority this spring. Action on the legislation was postponed last year.
