Matt Jenkins Named Scholarship Semifinalist
Matt Jenkins, a senior at Gonzaga Prep, is a semi-finalist for the 1998 National Merit Scholarship Program.
He is one of 15,000 students out of 1 million who scored highest on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. He is the son of Vern and Janet Jenkins.
Ten other G-Prep students are National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students:
Lisa Agostinelli, David Cannon, Melissa Conrad, Rebecca Gaffney-Brown, Kelly Mangiaracina, Bill Schroeder, Amanda Spethman, Mike Stucky, Lisa Thorne and Mary Willcox.
Jonathan Hunnicutt graduated with honors from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., where he majored in government and geography.
He is the son of Vernice Hunnicutt, Spokane.
Jamaica Vandolah, a 1997 graduate of Rogers High School, has earned $7,000 in scholarships.
She received a $1,000 Alumni Leadership Award from Washington State University, where she is studying education.
Vandolah also received a $1,000 Scholars Award, a $4,000 WSU Residence Award, a $500 Spokane Chiefs Award and a $500 Hillyard Rotary Award.
Several area students attending Whitman College received honors at entrance last fall by having a 3.8 grade-point average out of a perfect 4.

Deborah Fretwell, Mead High, daughter of Peter and Rebecca Fretwell, Spokane.
Nathaniel Sampson, North Central, son of Linnwood and Donna Sampson, Spokane.
Gordon Chapman, a professor of accounting at Eastern Washington University, has been selected as the E. Clair Daniels Distinguished Professor of Accounting.
The honor allows him a year in which to focus on particular needs or interests within the field of accounting.
Army Pvt. Joel Scruggs graduated from the Defense Information School, a basic broadcast journalism course, at Fort George G. Meade in Laurel, Md.
He is the son of Verne and Rhonda Scruggs, Newman Lake, and a 1995 graduate of East Valley High School.
Wesley D. Friesen, a 1995 East Valley High School graduate and son of Judy Labreche of Post Falls, and Ron D. Friesen of Greenacres, has enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as an Infantryman.
Friesen qualifies for up to $26,000 under the Army College Fund program due to enlistment choice and test scores. He will leave for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., in March.
