Red Sox first baseman Mo Vaughn launched a campaign to redeem his image after his arrest last weekend on drunken driving charges.

Speaking to the media at his hitting camp for kids, Vaughn said, “I’m still going to do the things I’ve always done. I’m in my element now, working with the kids.”

Vaughn had taken out ads in two Boston newspapers to express his regret over the arrest.

The Cincinnati Reds and arbitration-eligible Willie Greene, who led the team in home runs (26) and RBIs (91) in 1997, agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year contract.

Oregon State has selected eight semifinalists for the athletic director’s job, but the search committee has reportedly recommended interviews for four.

Among them is Irv Cross, athletic director at Idaho State University. Cross played professional football with the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, coached for the Eagles and was co-host of “The NFL Today” on CBS. He was picked for the Idaho State job in March 1996.
