Six Camp Fire Members Earn Wohelo Medallion

Six area Camp Fire members completed requirements for the Wohelo Medallion Award, the highest achievement a member can earn.

The medallion is awarded for completion of a self-planned individual project of personal development that encourages service, leadership and advocacy for improvement of conditions in society. It requires three to four years to complete.

The recipients, their high schools and parents are:

Laureen Smith, Gonzaga Prep, Gary and Sarah Smith; Tonya Smith, Deer Park, Neal and Chris Smith; Margaret “Meg” Seipp, Central Valley, Henry and Julia Seipp; Nikki Marchand, West Valley, Mike and Debbie Whitton, and Terry and Robin Marchand; Alicia Faires, University, Joseph and April Faires; and Melissa Cocks, Christian Liberty Academy, John and Jeannie Cocks.

Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Haedt has graduated from the Air Force Flight Screening Program in Hondo, Texas.

Haedt is a 1989 graduate of Ferris High School who received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Washington University and a master’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

He is the son of William and Barbara Haedt, Spokane.

The first class of Youth Leadership Spokane has graduated. The program is structured to help prepare and encourage a diverse group of high school sophomores and juniors to become leaders.

The graduates are listed by their high schools:

Shadle Park: Michael Bloom, Angela Hoard, Eric Forbes and John Treppiedi

Medical Lake: Beth Bow, Atiya Palmer and Jessie Quintero

Lewis and Clark: Luke Bowman, Lindsay Lyman, MonaLisa Operana, Pat Luce and Jennifer Wolfe.

Gonzaga Prep: Eric Breeden, Marc Cote, Todd Engstrom, Rebecca Gaffney-Brown and Allison Lambert.

Lakeside: Todd Broughton, Anthony Layton and Rebecca Som.

Ferris: Ryan Cassidy and Andy Rigsby.

East Valley: Sarah Emami and Amber Lewis.

University: Sara Hammer.

Cheney: Brian-Keith Jennings.

North Central: Kristine Lockwood and Troy McLaughlin.

Riverside: Keshia Shorts and Jennifer Wolfe.

Matthew Crotty received the George C. Marshall Award as an ROTC cadet at Gonzaga University. This award is presented to the most outstanding ROTC cadet at each college or university.

He is the son of Robert and Nancy Crotty and is a 1993 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Sharon Matthews, Spokane, received a Silver Leadership Award from the national headquarters of Junior Achievement Inc. for her volunteer contributions locally, regionally and nationally.

Matthews has served on the JA board of directors since 1990 and was chairman in 1994-95.

She was one of 85 among 100,000 members nationwide to win the award.

Four Spokane volunteers with Junior Achievement of the Inland Northwest received national awards from Junior Achievement Inc. for their contribution to the organization.

Bronze Leadership awards were presented to Tom Colosimo of Medical Services Corp., Brian McNaughton, PEMCO Financial Services, Sue Thilo and Dr. Thomas Thilo.

Three Spokane students won the American History Essay Contests sponsored in June by the Spokane Garry Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Whitney Boyington, a home-schooled 10th-grade student, won the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest; Erin Faye Boyington, a sixth-grade home-schooled student, won the Trails West Essay Contest for the sixth-grade category; and Christopher Poppy, a fifth-grade student at Cataldo Catholic School, won the Trails West Essay Contest for fifth-grade students.

In addition, Mable “Bert” Fletcher received the Volunteer Community Service Award for starting the Meals on Wheels program in Spokane.

David Tevlin, sponsored by the Spokane Garry Chapter of DAR, won the Outstanding Veteran Patient Award.

Jim Gotzian, a stockbroker with Dain Bosworth, received the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 1997 Personal Achievement Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Inland Northwest Chapter.

Gotzian, who has limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, serves on the board of directors for the Inland Automobile Association, is president of Family Services of Spokane and is active with the local MDA chapter.

The Spokane Central Lions Club awarded $13,500 in scholarships to seven students, now college freshmen.

The students and their graduating high schools are:

Justin Schutz and Nicole Mauldin, Shadle; Katherine Sluder and Sebastian Townsend, Lewis and Clark; Ed Eschenbacher and Darcy O’Neill, North Central; and Nicholas Feulner, Gonzaga Prep.

Four Spokane-area students were selected to join Gonzaga University’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities.

Enrollment into the society, the highest available to Jesuit students, is reserved for the top 4 percent of junior and senior classes and is based on scholarship, loyalty and service.

The students are:

Tracey Bartzen, Matt Crotty and Paula Schmitz, all of Spokane, and Alyson Reighley, Veradale.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Douglas Askerman, son of Susie Askerman of Spokane, has received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

He is stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

Andrea McGhee was selected as one of the country’s most outstanding campus leaders by the editorial staff of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges, based on academic activities and potential for continued success.

McGhee is a student at Spokane Falls Community College and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sutphin, Spokane.

Joe Hiep Le received the 1997 Challenge Scholarship from the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. He was sponsored by the Spokane Housing Authority.

Le was a student at Rogers High School when he received the $250 scholarship.
