Stricter Day Care Law Likely Cda Council Expected To Expand Background Checks For Workers

People who want to run day-care centers in the Lake City soon may have to undergo more rigorous background checks.

The Coeur d’Alene City Council is expected to approve the more stringent day-care licensing ordinances at its regular meeting Tuesday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The proposed ordinance generally expands the scope of the background check the city will undertake before issuing a license.

Among other things, the new law would mean people convicted of indecent exposure in the past 10 years could not receive a day-care license.

The law already prohibits day-care permits for people convicted of a variety of crimes, including sexual abuse, incest, lewd conduct and murder.

The City Council also will hear a request to allow garbage haulers to come calling an hour earlier.

The city’s garbage contractor, Waste Management, says Coeur d’Alene’s growth is making it difficult to cover its routes. Being allowed to start garbage pickup at 6 a.m. would ease the problem, the company says.

The council’s General Services Committee is recommending Waste Management receive permission to start garbage pickup at 6 a.m. on a trial basis. Under that recommendation, garbage pickup would immediately revert to no earlier than 7 a.m. if there are a large number of complaints.

In other business, the owners of a piece of ground between Fruitland Lane and U.S. Highway 95 will take their case for rezoning the property from residential to commercial to the council. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 8-0 against the change last fall.

Several residents of the mobile home park now at that location told the commission the zone change would hurt them because their mobile homes were too old to move and because they cannot afford the higher lot rent at other mobile home parks. The commission also was concerned about increasing the traffic on Fruitland Lane.
