Distance No Issue For Ferris Saxons Boys Corral Panthers; CV Triumphs, Still Shares Lead

Mead was good inside, Ferris was better outside.

An ability to knock down outside shots, led by the long-range shots of Tommy Servine, allowed the thirdranked Saxons to defeat Mead 61-48 at the Arena Tuesday night.

Ferris ended the first half of the Greater Spokane League boys basketball season tied for first with No. 4 Central Valley, which pulled away from Rogers 71-64 in overtime at CV.

After a high-speed first quarter, Ferris (10-1 overall, 8-1 GSL) used four straight Mead turnovers for a 9-0 run to break open the game in the middle part of the second quarter.

Andre Atkins started the surge with a shot from the lane that made it 24-19. John Mietus followed with a shot from the left wing, Atkins hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Chris Watts capped the charge with a putback for a 31-19 Ferris lead 2:09 before the half.

The Saxons led 33-23 at halftime, hitting 14 of 20 shots to make up for nine turnovers. Only the play of 6-foot-8 Mead post Brian Wolverton kept the Panthers (7-4, 6-3) in the game. Wolverton made all six of his field goals for 13 points. He made his only shot of the second half to finish with 15.

Jason Galles carried the offense for Mead with all 15 of his points in the second half, but the Panthers couldn’t get closer than eight.

“It was a good win for us, but we had a hard time slowing down their big guys,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “It wasn’t any strategic thing (stopping Wolverton). That’s just the way things played out. Galles has more range, Wolverton’s were basically layins… . We had to compact it in to compete with that. Some teams if we do that hurt us bad from the outside.”

Ferris had more balance with Servine hitting four 3s for a season-high 17 points. Atkins added 13 points, hitting all five of his shots and both free throws.

The Saxons also beat the bigger Panthers on the boards with Servine grabbing a game-high eight.

“Tommy had a great game on the defensive boards,” Gilman said. “He really stepped up.”

Central Valley 71, Rogers 64 (OT)

Tom Perkes had four of his career-high 20 points and three of his 11 rebounds in overtime as the Bears (9-1, 8-1) pulled away from the Pirates (7-4, 5-4).

Rogers was hurt when leading scorer Jason Ridley fouled out early in overtime. A steal and a 3-pointer by Ridley, who finished with 12 points, had tied the game with 5 seconds left in regulation.

Ryan Smith had 16 points, eight assists and four steals for CV. Sam Dempsey had 19 points and nine rebounds for Rogers, which trailed by seven in the fourth quarter.

Justin Defour dropped in a 6-foot shot with 16 seconds left for the Tigers (8-3, 7-2) and the visiting Bullpups (3-8, 3-6) missed their final shot as time ran out.

Matty MacIntyre’s 3-pointer with a minute left put Prep up by one, and LC elected to run the clock down before going for a shot.

Earl Avery scored a season-high 20 points for LC, hitting 7 of 10 shots, to offset three players in double figures for the Pups.
