World Champ Out Of Rally

World champion Tommi Makinen lost control of his car, crashed and dropped out of the Monte Carlo Rally, allowing Carlos Sainz to take the lead.

Two-time world champion Sainz, driving a Toyota, led by just under a minute. Three-time world champion Juha Kankkunen was second in a Ford Escort.
