Caribbean Rhythms With Bakra Bata

The hot sounds of the Caribbean will be floating out of the Panida Theater tonight when Bakra Bata performs as part of the Sandpoint Winter Carnival.

The steel drum, percussion, dance and mask ensemble performs music that’s quintessentially Caribbean right down to the colorful costumes and masks.

The dance rhythms have roots in reggae, calypso, merengae and samba. The musicians use hand drums made from wood and animal skins, congas from Cuba and surdo bass drums from Brazil as well as other instruments fashioned from gourds.

In addition to the concert, Bakra Bata will give a drumming and dance workshop at 3 p.m. today at the Panida. The workshop is free but pre-registration is encouraged since space is limited; call (208) 263-6139 to register.

Tickets to the Bakra Bata concert are $10.50, $8.50 for Pend Oreille Arts Council members, $6.50 for students younger than 18, and are available at Eve’s Leaves, 326 N. First and the Lyman Gallery in the Old Power House.
