East Valley Sets Itself Up For Title

GNL, FL wrestling

If predictions are accurate, East Valley wrapped up the Frontier League wrestling title Thursday at its season-opening meet.

The Knights stormed to a 51-16 win at Clarkston (1-1), the team most expected to match up with EV. The Knights won the first 10 matches before Tyson Thivierge’s major decision at 178.

Josh Sommer, at 101 pounds, started EV’s rout with a first-round pin. Kevin Woolf (122) recorded a 10-8 overtime win, then Justin Walker (129) and Brad Crockett (141) scored technical falls.

At Cheney, Josh Yarnell (190), Seth Morris (215) and Blake Falor (275) had consecutive pins to erase an 11-3 deficit, and the Blackhawks (1-1) defeated West Valley 40-29 despite forfeiting three matches.

Cheney’s Joe Wulcyzinski, at 168, defeated Rick Collins 3-2 because of a first-round stalling point. WV (0-1) opened the meet with Trevor Britton’s 16-0 technical fall over Nate Lawton at 158.

Great Northern League

Justin Divis improved to 17-0 by defeating Nolan Jones 7-2 at 158 during Colville’s 55-18 win over visiting Deer Park (3-2). Jones finished sixth at the high-powered Tri-State meet in Coeur d’Alene last month.

The Indians (5-0), tuning up for Thursday’s showdown with top-ranked Lakeside, had eight other pins. Travis Berger (101) and Joe Waunch (141) had second-round pins for the Stags.

At Nine Mile, Adrian Laughery, protecting a 6-3 lead at 158, pinned Chris Eggleston with 30 seconds left as Lakeside (4-0) powered to a 79-0 win over visiting Chewelah (1-4), which forfeited seven matches. The Eagles’ Matt Westenfelder (168) remained unbeaten in league with a 22-8 major decision over Nathan Scott.

Spencer Murphy (190) had a reversal late in regulation and a takedown 40 seconds into overtime to defeat B.J. Hammond 9-7, and Riverside (2-3) notched a 51-23 win at Pullman (1-4).

Riverside’s T.J. Murony defeated Lucas Svaren 7-6 at 115 with a takedown and near fall toward the end. Craig Alexander (178) pinned Pullman’s Andy Martson while trailing.

Ben Steele (135) and Anthony Bianche (190) had first-round pins as Medical Lake (3-2) rolled to a 62-18 win over visiting Newport-Cusick (0-4). , DataTimes MEMO: This sidebar appeared with the story: DREAM DUALS A trio of Spokane-area teams will test high state wrestling rankings at Saturday’s annual Washington Dream Duals at Auburn High School.
