Russian Pianist Steps Into The Gap With Symphony

Travis Rivers

Vladimir Feltsman will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Spokane Symphony tonight at the Opera House. The 46-year-old, Russian-born pianist is a substitute for Horacio Gutierrez, who became ill with the flu earlier this week.

Feltsman is no stranger to Spokane. He performed with the orchestra in 1981, playing a spectacularly virtuosic Rachmaninoff Third.

Other works on tonight’s program are RimskyKorsakov’s “Russian Easter Overture,” Kodaly’s “Dances of Galanta” and Stravinsky’s ballet “Jeu de cartes.” Fabio Mechetti will conduct.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $13.50 to $28.50 and are available at the symphony box office in the Seafirst Building, 624-1200, and at G&B outlets, 325-SEAT.
