St. George’s Far From Worn Out

Nathan Joyce Correspondent

Miranda Routh-Corker had the flu. Wenchi Liu had foul trouble.

Those facts alone meant little for fourth-ranked St. George’s, which defeated seventh-ranked Wellpinit 75-56 Friday in a battle of Panorama League leaders.

Routh-Corker played in all four quarters, then collapsed on the bench from fever and exhaustion. She was quickly led to a well-deserved cold shower after totaling 14 points and nine rebounds.

Point guard Liu finished with 13 assists and 13 points despite missing much of the second quarter after three first-quarter fouls.

St. George’s (13-2 overall, 10-0 Panorama South) gained big support from freshman Samantha Clarke. Helping in Liu’s absence, Clarke scored 20 points and added five assists and six rebounds.

“Samantha Clarke’s poise really pulled us through,” said Dragons coach Ross Thomas.

Miranda Payne of Wellpinit (12-2, 9-1 North) scored a game-high 22, carrying her team for much of the second quarter. Scoring 12 of the team’s 17, she hit the team’s lone field goals in the quarter.

St. George’s jumped out to an early 14-4 lead, but Wellpinit put together a 10-4 streak. The Dragons increased their lead to 15 in the second quarter after going on a 10-4 run to close out the half. Routh-Corker and Clarke combined for 18 points in the quarter.

“The girls let them get in their heads early,” Redskins coach Tiger Peone said of St. George’s, “and we just couldn’t recover.”

Winning league games is something the Dragons do with frequency. St. George’s has won 162 of its last 168 in the Panorama League.
