Titans Maintain Winning Feeling

GSL girls

It took a lot longer than the University Titans would have liked, but once they won they were ready to roll.

Five games later, U-Hi is in the middle of the girls basket ball playoff race, evening its record with a 57-52 win over Lewis and Clark at the Arena on Friday afternoon.

“We really didn’t have confidence when we were 0-4,” said sophomore Teresa Valkenaar, who led the Titans with a career-high 13 points. “The first win was big.”

The Titans started the season with six losses, including four in league. Three of the league losses were by less than nine points.

Once they broke through with a 14-point win against Gonzaga Prep, the Titans won five of six by an average of more than 14 points.

“The majority of it comes down to shooting,” U-Hi coach Bob Finn said. “The first four (league) games we shot under 40 percent, two under 30 percent. We were getting pretty good shots. … We weren’t playing bad basketball.”

Against the Tigers (5-7 overall, 5-5 GSL), who won the first meeting 51-45, the Titans (5-7, 5-5) got off to a big start. They hit 8 of 15 in the first quarter for a 19-11 lead and were at 13 of 28 at halftime when they led 31-15.

“It’s not necessarily that they’re different,” LC coach Jim Redmon said. “He has a lot of sophomores and they’re getting better.”

Valkenaar had nine at the break, hitting all four of her shots, including a 3-pointer. “I shot more; I started driving,” the 6-foot forward said. “Coach said I needed to step it up.”

Stepping up was Shasta Glotfelty, a 5-11 junior post, who was unstoppable with 26 points.
