Vikings Rip Into Eagles Hoorelbeke Comes Up Big For Cda; Wv Shows Lack Of Spirit, Loses 55-35

After his older brother butchered the National Anthem, having to start over halfway through, Casey Hoorelbeke decided he’d better redeem the family name.

Hoorelbeke did so in a big way, leading Coeur d’Alene to a smooth 55-35 win over West Valley in a Border League boys basketball game Friday at Viking Gym.

Even the younger Hoorelbeke struggled before the game during warmups. There was no reason to believe the 6-foot-6 senior post would score a game-high 22 points, pull down 19 rebounds and block four shots. It was his best game since returning a week ago from a broken foot.

“During warmups, I wasn’t shooting the best; I had a couple of airballs,” said Hoorelbeke, who made 8 of 10 field goal attempts in the first half when he evenly split 16 points between the first two quarters. “After (warmups) I just wanted to have fun. I just let it go and decided to play as hard as I could.”

It marked the second straight game CdA (11-3 overall, 9-2 in league) held an opponent to 35 points.

For West Valley (7-7, 5-5), it was 32 minutes of frustration. It’s the lowest point total in 13 years for a Joe Feist-coached team. The Eagles needed two free throws and a lucky, off balanced jumper in the final 30 seconds to finish with 35. They were stuck on 31 for more than 6 minutes.

Feist refused to blame any part of the loss on his team’s youth.

“We didn’t even compete,” Feist said. “It’s a shame Coeur d’Alene had to show up and not get a game out of it. Age is one thing and lack of will to compete is another.”

CdA enjoyed an 18-point lead late in the first half. West Valley couldn’t get any closer than 14 in the second half, that coming when Ryan Spivey made a basket to make it 40-26 with 1:33 left in the third quarter.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jeff Rupp extended CdA’s lead to 55-31 with 3:27 left - the widest margin in the game.

“Casey was just automatic,” CdA coach Larry Bieber said. “He’s capable of dominating a game like that. He stepped up and it’s nice having him back 100 percent physically.”

Spivey led West Valley with 13 points.

CdA plays at home against Clarkston tonight. The Bantams were hammered by the Viks 66-22 in December. West Valley looks to bounce back tonight when it plays at Lake City.
