Ertl’s Giant Slalom Win Sets German National Record
Triumphant Martina Ertl celebrated a record Sunday in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, and Deborah Compagnoni sustained a rare defeat.
Winning her seventh World Cup giant slalom, Ertl replaced Irene Epple as Germany’s leading winner in the event. Compagnoni failed for the first time in more than a year to reach the podium.
Ertl won her seventh World Cup giant slalom by 1.55 seconds over teammate Katja Seizinger, eclipsing Epple’s national record of six wins. Sophie Lefranc-Duvillard of France was third.
The powerful Austrian men’s team returned to its dominating form as Olympic champion Thomas Stangassinger and Thomas Sykora finished 1-2 in a World Cup slalom in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Ole Christian Furuseth of Norway was third.
