Denver Win Suggests Stock Market Fumble

As if the potential for slowing profit growth wasn’t enough for U.S. stock market investors to worry about, now this: The Denver Broncos beat the Green Bay Packers 31-24 in the Super Bowl.

In the 31 years the Super Bowl has been played, stocks usually rose for the year when the winner was a team that was in the National Football League before its 1970 merger with the American Football League. With an AFL winner, major market indexes usually fall. The Super Bowl predictor has been 90 percent accurate.

But in the first day of trading after Sunday’s Super Bowl, the Dow Jones industrial average edged higher Monday after three days of setbacks.
