Crane Hits N.Y. Tram, Injuring 11 Commuters
A tram that carries commuters between Manhattan and an island in the East River was hit by a construction crane Tuesday, and 11 people were injured.
The Manhattan-bound tram was carrying at least 20 passengers from Roosevelt Island during the morning rush hour.
The crane, which was being used to do repair work on the nearby Queensboro Bridge, was lifting a piece of equipment when a “miscommunication” occurred between crane and tram operators, police deputy inspector Michael Collins said. They were using radios.
Passengers were tossed about. The injured suffered bumps and bruises.
