Knicks Without All-Star Rep

Associated Press

Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller and San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson are among the reserves selected for the National Basketball Association’s All-Star Game to be played Feb. 8 at Madison Square Garden.

No New York Knicks were named, the first time that no member of the host team was selected since 1994.

Robinson leads the Western Conference reserves, which include forwards Tim Duncan of San Antonio and Vin Baker of Seattle, and guards Jason Kidd of Phoenix, Mitch Richmond of Sacramento and Eddie Jones and Nick Van Exel of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Western Conference starters will be forwards Karl Malone of Utah and Kevin Garnett of Minnesota, center Shaquille O’Neal of the Lakers and guards Gary Payton of Seattle and Kobe Bryant of the Lakers.

Los Angeles will be the first team to have four players on the All-Stars since the 1983 Philadelphia 76ers.

Miller will be joined on the Eastern Conference team by center Rik Smits of Indiana, forwards Glen Rice of Charlotte, Antoine Walker of Boston and Jayson Williams of New Jersey and guards Tim Hardaway of Miami and Steve Smith of Atlanta.

The Eastern Conference starters will be forwards Grant Hill of Detroit and Shawn Kemp of Cleveland, center Dikembe Mutombo of Atlanta and guards Michael Jordan of Chicago and Anfernee Hardaway of Orlando.

Sprewell hearing starts

Behind a curtain of secrecy, an arbitrator began hearing testimony Tuesday in Portland on whether the NBA and the Golden State Warriors excessively punished Latrell Sprewell for choking and threatening to kill coach P.J. Carlesimo.

Arbitrator John Feerick, dean of the Fordham Law School, has issued a gag order, barring those involved from revealing testimony.

Sprewell was thrown out of the league for a year, the longest non-drug suspension in NBA history, and the remaining three years of his contract with Golden State, valued at $25 million, were terminated.

The opening session last 10 hours, including a break for lunch. The hearing is expected to continue throughout the week, and a ruling isn’t expected until next month.

On the courts

Glen Rice scored 13 of Charlotte’s final 26 points and wound up with 42 to help the Hornets to a 120-113 double-overtime victory over the visiting Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.
