Ccs Women Taking Control

Thanks to a key second-half rally, the Community Colleges of Spokane women’s basketball team is sitting pretty in the Eastern Division of the NWAACC.

The Sasquatch, trailing by 10 points at halftime, responded in the second half and defeated Big Bend Community College 73-69 Wednesday at Spokane Community College.

“This was a huge win because now we’re pretty much in control of the Eastern Division. Even though we didn’t play a great game, we are in first place and we’re ranked No. 4 in the NWAACC, so things are going well,” said CCS coach Bruce Johnson.

The Sasquatch (18-4, 6-0 NWAACC), go into the second half of league play with a two-game cushion over second place Big Bend (12-9, 4-2).

Down 38-28 at halftime, Spokane took its first lead of the second half with about 10 minutes remaining, and the game remained tight to the finish.

As might be expected in such a close game, Spokane’s starters were the key to success.

“Kelly Pilkington (15 points, 14 rebounds) had a great game. She did a great job. Lisa Bocook had a solid second half at the point… . All five of our starters did a nice job,” Johnson said.

As might not be expected, even in such a tight game, the five starters scored all of the Sasquatch’s points. Shelley Massingale led with 21, followed by Alana Carlander (17), Pilkington, Bocook (10) and Lisa Bradley (10).

The second half of the league schedule begins Saturday when the Sasquatch play Blue Mountain at SCC.

In the annual Prairie Pig games between Post Falls and Lakeland High of Coeur d’Alene, the Hawks took home the bacon but not the glory.

Lakeland was awarded the tiny battery-operated pig, symbolic of the spirit competition, but the Trojans won both games. The Post Falls boys prevailed 52-40 and the girls rolled 66-35.
