Airport Cargo Volume Set Record Last Year

Spokane International Airport set records for cargo handling in 1997.

For the first time in the airport’s history, more than 100 million pounds of cargo were shipped through the facility. The 54,703.5 tons represented almost a 13 percent increase over 1996’s 48,517 tons.

During December, passenger traffic was down slightly from December 1996 as 270,866 passengers got on or off planes at the airport compared with 280,698 in December 1996. For the year, passenger traffic was off 6.6 percent from 1996.

During the last three months of 1996, the combined operations of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, both owned by the same company, handled 41 percent of the airport’s passenger traffic. Alaska carried 21 percent of the passengers and Horizon 20.2 percent. Southwest Airlines handled 28 percent of the airport’s passenger traffic.

United was next with 14.5 percent, Delta carried 9.6 percent and Northwest 5.9 percent. , DataTimes
