Sonics Top Warriors; Kersey Out 6 Weeks

Associated Press

Gary Payton scored 30 points and Vin Baker had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to their 12th straight victory over Golden State, 109-97 Thursday night.

The Sonics improved their NBA-best record to 35-10 by defeating the Warriors for the third time this season.

However, the Sonics placed forward Jerome Kersey on the injured list with a separated left shoulder, and activated guard James Cotton.

Kersey is expected to miss up to six weeks after injuring the shoulder in the Sonics’ Wednesday night victory over Utah.

Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo, who just returned from the Latrell Sprewell arbitration hearing in Portland, watched his team lose for the 34th time this season.

The Warriors cut Seattle’s lead to 86-78 on a driving 5-foot bank shot by Brian Shaw with 8:14 to go, but Detlef Schrempf’s short jump hook and a 3-pointer by Dale Ellis gave the Sonics a 91-78 lead with 6:46 left. Ellis’ 3-pointer with 5:12 remaining gave Seattle a 98-82 lead.

Donyell Marshall had 18 points for Golden State. Joe Smith, the Warriors’ leading scorer with a 17.0 average, was held to nine points.

Schrempf and Ellis each scored 18 points for the Sonics.

Payton was 11 of 23 from the field, including 3 of 9 from 3-point range. Ellis was 4 of 7 from long range.

The Warriors outscored Seattle 8-0 in the final 2:13 of the third quarter, the last points on a fastbreak layup by Tony Delk after a steal from Payton. The Sonics took a 78-58 lead on a 3-pointer by Ellis with 3:07 to go.
