Treasurer To Seek A Fourth Term

From Staff And Wire Reports

Kootenai County treasurer Jeannine Ashcraft will run for re-election in November, she announced Thursday.

Now serving her third term, Ashcraft was first elected in 1986.

A Republican, she has no announced opponents so far.

Ashcraft pointed out that the number of full-time employees was 11 when she took office, dropped to eight in 1987 and has stayed at eight despite a growing population to serve.

“This has been an annual savings of at least $60,000 (considering benefits) for over $600,000,” she said.

She credited improved training and equipment.

Parcels of property have increased from less than 40,000 to more than 70,000, she added.

Besides serving as the county’s banker, the treasurer collects taxes and represents residents who die without a will or relative to handle their estates.
