Eagles Win Gnl Clash

Girls basketball

Riverside gave off the wrong impression during the first 4 minutes of Friday’s game with Lakeside.

The Rams made it appear they were in charge.

The next 23 minutes showed otherwise, as Lakeside strung together runs of 20-2 and 16-0 to smother the visiting Rams 54-32 and break a first-place tie in the Great Northern League.

Senior Brianne Jolley scored 10 of her 23 points in the second quarter, when the Eagles (12-1 overall, 7-0 GNL), ranked No. 2 in 2A, held the fourth-ranked Rams (10-2, 6-1) scoreless.

Junior Nikki Petticrew added 10 points in the third quarter to assure the Eagles’ 11th consecutive win. Riverside had won nine straight.

The Rams, charged by Bernice Stime’s seven points, led 11-2 midway through the first quarter. Adding to Lakeside’s early grief, Petticrew sat on the bench with two fouls and the team piled up seven quick turnovers.

Then the tone changed, starting with a 7-0 Lakeside flurry capped by Janel Long’s 3-pointer. The Rams still led early in the second quarter, but Jolley scored 10 consecutive points, including a coast-to-coast layin to seize the lead for good.

“Our defense set up our offense,” said the St. Mary’s-bound Jolley. “When we had that one defensive series (two consecutive 30-second violations by Riverside) I knew we were going to win.”

Stime never scored again, Petticrew had no more fouls and Lakeside slashed its turn-over rate to less than three per quarter.

Petticrew, battling back from an ankle injury, hit 7 of 9 from the field, including three 3-pointers.

“By far, she’s back,” said Eagles coach Lisa Schultz. She needs to shoot 12-15 times a game. Tonight’s an indication of what she can do.”

Jolley hit 11 of 19 from the field and combined with reserve Julia Vojtech for 17 rebounds. Riverside senior forward Abbey Wood hit 7 of 14 from the floor, including a 3-pointer.

The teams, old rivals from Northeast A League days, hadn’t played in three years because Riverside had a brief stay in the Frontier League.

Rams coach Chris Wren could only shrug and laugh about putting three defenders on Jolley when the teams meet again, Valentine’s Day at Riverside.

“Just because we went through the first round (of the GNL) undefeated doesn’t mean we can relax,” Schultz said.
