Padres Rally Against Wells

Associated Press

Five Mariners pitchers managed to hold a lead Sunday, but the sixth - Bob Wells - allowed three runs in the eighth inning as San Diego rallied for a 5-4 victory.

“Wells didn’t pitch well last spring and he hasn’t pitched well this spring,” said Seattle manager Lou Piniella. “If he pitches like this, I don’t like his chances.”

George Arias’ two-out, two-run double hung the loss on Wells.

The Mariners went ahead 2-0 in the second inning after loading the bases against Sterling Hitchcock. Dan Wilson doubled in both runs. Alex Rodriguez doubled twice for the M’s.

It will be a doubleheader of sorts today, with the Mariners playing a “B” game against Oakland on one of their practice fields in the morning, then a Cactus League game against the A’s in Peoria Stadium at 12:05 p.m. Rookie Ryan Anderson will start for the M’s “B” team, and the starters in the second game are Tom Candiotti and Randy Johnson.
