Council Expected To Ok $119,000 Dock Overhaul Last Year’s Floods Caved In About A Third Of The Dock

Much of the storm-battered city dock at Independence Point will be replaced during the next few months.

The Coeur d’Alene City Council is expected to approve a $119,000 overhaul of the dock at its regular meeting this evening. Years of weather and water have battered the dock.

Last year’s floods and winds caved in about a third of the structure. After 50 years of service, some of the float logs won’t hold the spikes that attach them to the rest of the dock.

Murphy Marine Construction Co. is lined up for a $111,845 contract to tear out the dock and install a new 32-foot-by-243-foot dock. County Electric & Telephone is expected to land the $7,500 contract to rewire the dock area and install new telephone lines.

In addition to a more stable dock, the project will involve building a new, longer pedestrian ramp that has a more gentle pitch during low water.

The City Council also is expected to approve a $12,700 increase in the architect’s contract for the proposed new police station. The original proposal for a new building was only 14,000 square feet.

After more thorough study, city officials have come up with a 20,000-square-foot plan that allows room for several years of growth. Building a bigger building now is less expensive than starting another police addition in 10 years, police say.

If the city approves the addition to the H2A Architects’ contract, it will bring total design costs to about $224,000.

In other business the council will consider:

An ordinance prohibiting cranes from using the area around the Third Street boat launch. Crane use was suspended a year ago because of damage to the seawall.

Allowing recreational vehicles to park for up to a half hour in the parking lot of the Museum of North Idaho. That move is designed to allow people driving RVs to use the museum and visitor center.

Changing the minimum landscaping required for large parking areas.

Giving Brian Stranger and Coeur d’Alene Crush Girls Softball the lease for a concession stand at the Ramsey Park Softball field.
