Eastern’s Taylor Honored By Sky For His Big Finish

Shannon Taylor, who scored 57 points in 54 minutes off the bench in two Eastern Washington University wins last week, is the final Big Sky Conference men’s basketball player of the week for the season.

Taylor, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior guard, scored 33 points in a 97-95 overtime victory at Idaho State, including a basket with 1:14 left in overtime to give the Eagles a lead they never relinquished.

He then had 24 points in the 93-86 home win over Portland State. Taylor made his first seven shots - including four 3-pointers - on his way to an 8-of-10 shooting performance. He also had eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Two EWU women honored

Eastern Washington had two players gain honorable mention when the Big Sky Conference announced its women’s all-conference basketball team.

Honored were Juli Carlson and Tracy Ford.

Montana senior point guard Skyla Sisco was named MVP, and Edniesha Curry of Cal State Northridge was voted freshman of the year. Northern Arizona junior RaeAnn West and Montana sophomore Linda Cummings were named the league’s top sixth players.

Sisco became just the second player in league history to earn all-conference honors four times.

Idaho hall to add four

The Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame will induct four members at the Idaho Sports Banquet on March 21 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn Conference Center.

Inductees are Tom Bell, Gordon Brown, Edward “Bud” Riley and Mary Low Fahrenwald Acuff.

Bell coached high school sports in southern Idaho before becoming an administrator at the University of Idaho. He was Idaho’s interim president in 1995-96.

Riley, a Vandals football player from 1948-50, went on to coach at Wallace High School, UI, Oregon State and in the Canadian Football League.

Brown was a three-sport star in high school and at Idaho State University. He coached prep basketball in Idaho from 1950-85, winning one state championship.

Acuff grew up in Moscow, competing in golf and tennis, and graduated from UI. She has won more than 50 national and world racquetball championships in seniors and masters events.
