Obituaries

Norma Schauer Pinehurst, Idaho

Service for Norma Lee Schauer, 65, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at the Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst.

Mrs. Schauer, who was born in Colorado, died Saturday.

She moved to Idaho and graduated from Harrison High School in 1952 and then moved to Colorado. Mrs. Schauer moved to Shoshone County in 1965 and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Melvin; three daughters, Bonnie Phillips, Shirley Hooper and Lori Goddard, all of Pinehurst; three brothers, Vernon and Francis Smiley and John Burket, all of Utah; two sisters, Rehannah Stice and Thelma Boxley, both of Colorado; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Vern Oleson Rathdrum, Idaho

At his request, no service will be held for Vern K. Oleson, 75. Private family service will be held later. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Oleson, who was born in South Dakota, died Thursday.

He moved to North Idaho in 1936 and then was stationed in the Philippines and served as a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Oleson returned to North Idaho in 1947 and worked as a railroad lineman and a rancher and then for Spokane Steel Foundry, retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Marilyn; a son, John Oleson of Hayden, Idaho; two daughters, Sharon Borders of Silverton and Rae Malagiero of Georgia; two stepdaughters, Shirley Gossett of Spokane and Brenda Gilcrist of Rathdrum; a stepson, Gary Ormiston of Arizona; a brother, Wilbur Oleson of Coeur d’Alene; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

James Hill Spokane

Memorial service for James H. ‘Jim’ Hill, 68, will be at 3 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Hill, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Saturday.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and in 1951 received his degree in hotel administration from Washington State University.

In 1951 he married Betty Cauvel in Spokane, and he served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Hill returned to Spokane and worked for the Desert Caravan Inn in its accounting department. Then, in 1955, he left the hotel to become the first manager of the Davenport Hotel’s Matador Restaurant when it first opened.

The next year he returned to Coeur d’Alene to manage the Desert Hotel, once run by his father. He returned to Spokane in 1958 to manage the Manito Golf and Country Club and in 1959 went back to the Desert chain as manager of the Spokane Desert Hotel. He became manager of the Caravan Inn in 1960.

In 1961 Mr. Hill resigned and became the general manager of the Catamaran Motor Hotel in Mission Beach, San Diego.

An association with Hyatt Hotels in California began in 1964, and he was named general manager of the City of Commerce Hyatt House Hotel in Los Angeles in 1966 before joining Hyatt International in 1970.

He then was posted in Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Tehran, Iran where he later started his own management company and lived in Spain, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

In 1989 a visit to Spokane led to the discovery that the Davenport Hotel was for sale, and his interest and efforts led to the acquisition of the Hotel by its present owners.

He and his wife moved back to Spokane in 1991 and have owned and operated Hill’s Someplace Else restaurant for the past four years.

Survivors include his wife and two sons, Steven and David Hill, both of Spokane.

Ora Swan Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Ora E. Swan, 98, will be today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Miss Swan, who was born in Minnesota, died Friday.

In 1903 she moved to North Idaho from Minnesota. She worked at the downtown J.C. Penney store for 22 years as a cashier.

Miss Swan had been a pianist at the Liberty and Dream Silent theaters in Coeur d’Alene and had served as the deputy Kootenai County clerk and recorder before retiring in 1966.

Survivors include a brother, Fred Swan, and a sister, Margaret Manley, both of Coeur d’Alene.

Karl ‘Larry’ Eich Lacey, Wash.

Service for Karl L. “Larry” Eich, 70, was Monday at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash. Burial followed at Garfield (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Eich, who was born in New Brunswick, N.J., died Thursday.

He served two years in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Eich moved to Garfield in 1949 and began a dry cleaning business. He was also a rural mail carrier for several years.

In 1950 he married Arlene Trimble in Garfield, and they made their home there until 1964, when they moved to Clarkston, Wash.

After one year, they moved to East Wenatchee, where he managed the Western Auto store until 1973. They then moved to Seattle, where he managed the auto and sporting goods departments at a Kmart until his retirement in 1990.

Mr. and Mrs. Eich then moved to Lacey.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dan Eich of Olympia; two daughters, Bevra Maybee of Sedona, Ariz., and Karla Alvord of Marysville, Wash.; a sister, Evelyn Brown of Sprague, Wash.; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Garfield-Farmington Emergency Medical Services or to the American Heart Association.

James Sherman Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for James L. Sherman, 56, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Sherman, who was born in Kellogg, died Thursday.

He grew in Coeur d’Alene, and joined the Army National Guard.

Mr. Sherman went to work for Robideaux Motors in 1958 and then worked for the family vending machine business.

He opened Jim’s Grill on Government Way in 1974 and operated it until 1979.

Mr. Sherman worked various jobs until starting his own lawn-care business in 1994. He retired in 1997.

Survivors include his companion, Marian; three daughters, Candice, Mary Beth and Petty Sherman, and a son, James Sherman, all of Spokane; a brother, Don Sherman of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Diane Rininger of Coeur d’Alene; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contribution may be made to Hospice of North Idaho.

Virginia McCallister Spokane

Service for Virginia McCallister, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial will follow. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCallister, who died Friday, was born in Salt Lake City.

She graduated from high school in Salt Lake City and in 1941 married Gola McCallister there.

They moved to Spokane in 1958 from Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. McCallister was a homemaker and was a member of the Homemakers Club.

Her husband died in 1976.

Survivors include three daughters, JoAnn Smith and Barbara Winkle, both of Spokane, and Marilyn Brockman of Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Marjorie Wheeler of Salem, Utah; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Care Center.
