Serb Police Disperse Albanian Protesters

Serbian police used truncheons, water cannon, and tear gas on Monday to disperse some 30,000 ethnic Albanians who were marching to protest the killing over the weekend of more than 20 civilians by paramilitaries.

Serious unrest in Kosovo province, where 90 percent of the people are ethnic Albanians, erupted on Friday when four Serbian policemen were killed in an ambush by rebels from the Kosovo Liberation Army.

Serbian authorities responded by sending out police reinforcements and heavily armed paramilitary units to track down the assailants.
