Martinez’s Single Wins It For Mariners

From Wire Reports

Spring training

Edgar Martinez hit a two-out single to left in the seventh inning to drive home the winning run as the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Tuesday in Peoria.

The hit was Martinez’s first of the spring.

Centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. went 2 for 3 including an RBI double in Seattle’s three-run first inning, and he added an over-the-head catch of a deep fly ball hit by Chicago’s Robert Muchado.

Andres Berumen pitched 2-1/3 shutout innings for the Mariners (3-2). Jordan Zimmerman, David Holdridge and Healthcliff Slocumb combined for 3-1/3 more innings of shutout pitching.

Jerry Whittaker went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the White Sox (1-5), who outhit Seattle 11-7.

Vaughn acquitted

Boston Red Sox first baseman Mo Vaughn was acquitted by a jury Tuesday on charges of drunken driving.

Vaughn stood expressionless as the verdict was read.

The jury returned the verdict after hearing testimony for two days and deliberating for three hours.

District Court Judge Gerald Alch had instructed the jury that “a person does not have to be drunk or unconscious to be under the influence.”

Vaughn, 30, was arrested Jan. 9 on his way home from a Providence, R.I., strip club after he hit a disabled car in the breakdown lane of Interstate 95 in Norwood. Vaughn’s sport utility vehicle rolled over but the slugger suffered no injuries.

Vaughn’s license has already been suspended for six months because he refused to take a breathalyzer test.

New York Mets outfielder Bernard Gilkey was arrested early this morning near the team’s spring training camp in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Gilkey, 31, was driving his 1998 Cadillac “at a high rate of speed” and swerving at 1:40 a.m. local time when he was pulled over, according to the police report.

Gilkey failed the tests and was cited for driving under the influence and failure to maintain a single lane, police said. He was also charged with refusing to take a breath test and failure to sign and accept a summons, police said.

Rays help tornado victims

Tampa Bay Devil Rays players raised $2,000 and the team will donate another $3,000 to aid the victims of tornadoes that hit central Florida last week.

“I am delighted at the players’ initiative and commend them for their actions, particularly those of (shortstop) Kevin Stocker and his wife, Brooke, the architects of the plan,” Vince Naimoli, managing general partner of the expansion team said.

The players also encouraged other teams training in Florida to make contributions.

“The Devil Rays players would like to challenge players on the other teams training in Florida to better our efforts,” Stocker said. “The thoughts and prayers of all the players on our roster will continue to go out to the victims and their families.”

Phillies sign Rolen

The Philadelphia Phillies re-signed third baseman Scott Rolen to a four-year, $10 million contract.

The contract also contains a no-trade clause and $125,000 in bonuses, including $100,000 if he wins the Most Valuable Player award.
