Beauty Call Theatre Ballet Of Spokane Calls In Reinforcements To Perform Mixed Repertoire

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Friday, March 6, 1998): Corrections Time wrong: The Theatre Ballet of Spokane’s performance of “Sleeping Beauty” Act III on Sunday is at 2 p.m. at The Met. A preview in Thursday’s IN Life section contained an incorrect performance time.

The 14 dancers in Theatre Ballet of Spokane will be joined by 10 others, including two guest dancers from San Francisco, to perform the third act of “Sleeping Beauty,” known as “Aurora’s Wedding.”

It’s far from a one-note program that the Spokane pre-professional troupe will stage Saturday and Sunday at The Met, though. In addition to performing in “Aurora’s Wedding,” guest dancers Tracy Julias-Shields and Fabrice Lemire will perform the world premiere of “Cahiers d’Enfance.”

Lemire choreographed the neoclassical ballet, a pas de deux commissioned by Theatre Ballet.

Before moving to San Francisco, where they travel extensively to dance with professional troupes, Julias-Shields and Lemire both danced in principal roles with Oregon Ballet Theatre in Portland. Julias-Shields now dances regularly with the Santa Barbara Ballet; Lemire is ballet master at the Donald Byrd Dance Company, a modern dance troupe in New York City.

The Theatre Ballet program also includes the popular Wendy Long-choreographed piece “Fragile,” set to music by Sting and Daniel Lanois. The piece requires just five dancers and was designed by Long, a choreographer and dancer now living in Reno, Nev., for the intimate stage of The Met.

The local 10-member Jazz It Up dance company will also dance during the program, performing “The Medley,” a jazz dance choreographed by Dominque Scola.

The dance includes a survey of jazz styles from the 1960s through the present.

The performance will last about 1-1/2 hours with one intermission.

Theatre Ballet of Spokane has staged more than 70 performances since its founding in 1987 and takes its educational lecture demonstrations to Spokane area schools. The troupe is based at Ballet Arts Academy.
