City Seeks Comments On Growth Strategy

How will the Spokane of the future look?

For two years, Spokane Horizons volunteers have worked creating goals and policies for the city’s new comprehensive plan. Now the city is asking for public comment on two growth strategies. Should the city continue growing outward, or should future growth be more focused?

Public meetings are scheduled throughout the city this month. Each will last just one hour. City planners will be available to answer questions.

For those who can’t attend a meeting, or who want to discuss the two strategies with smaller groups, a video is available at the downtown library and all library branches. The video is also available by calling the city at 625-6060.

On the South Side, public meetings will be held at:

East Side Library, 2, 4 and 5:30 p.m., March 17.

South Hill Library, 3:30, 5:30 and 7 p.m., March 26.

Presentations are also scheduled at the downtown library at noon, 3 and 5:30 p.m. March 19.

Citizens League plans casual forum tonight

“Whatever Happened to Wiley’s Grocery Store?” is the topic of the next Brew Pub sponsored by the Citizens League of Greater Spokane. The public discussion begins at 5:30 tonight at Europa Pizzaria downtown.

The public is invited to to share opinions and ideas about how to return retail services to neighborhoods. What are key roles for developers, banks and community organizations?

The brew pub concept is intended to stimulate conversation and provide ways to explore issues in a casual, informative way without formal presentations, agendas or homework.

Greg Sweeney, a member of the Citizens League, said efforts are being made to encourage smaller, local retailers to participate in the conversation.
