Zlatko Savovic and Tim Bjella scored 12 points each to lead Everett (21-5) to a 47-29 victory over cold-shooting West Valley (Yakima) in the first round of the Washington high school Class 3A boys basketball tournament Wednesday in Seattle.

West Valley of Yakima (22-4) shot just 18 percent from the field, including 3 for 23 in the opening half. Everett only shot 28 percent, but outscored the Bears 17-6 from the free-throw line.

The defending champion Islanders (25-2) got 12 points apiece from juniors Josh Fisher and Tyler Besecker to beat the Tigers (20-4).

Mercer Island outscored Burlington-Edison 15-6 in the last half of the second quarter to take a 31-20 lead. The game was never in doubt after that.
