St. John’s Cathedral Setting For Celebration Of Brahms

Johannes Brahms will be the star of a Cathedral and the Arts concert Sunday at The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

This concert will have Brahms on trumpet, Brahms on organ, Brahms on harp, and Brahms for women’s voices. No wonder it’s called “Brahms: A Celebration.”

The occasion is the 100th anniversary of Brahm’s death, which makes this concert only slightly late. Brahms died in 1897 at the age of 64, so instead of being billed as a concert on the anniversary, this is billed as a concert after the anniversary.

Two Brahms organ choral preludes will make up the centerpiece of the first half of the concert. Charles Bradley Jr. will preside on the organ.

The second half of the program features Four Songs by Brahms for women’s voices with horn and harp. This will be performed by a women’s chorus made up of members of the Spokane Symphony Chorale, prepared by Charles Zimmerman. Camille Peterson will perform on harp, and Margaret Wilds and Judy James on horn.

The finale will be Brahm’s Horn Trio.

Not everything will be Brahms-ian. The first half of the program will include a trumpet concerto by Johann Walther, performed by Larry Jess, and two pieces by Telemann for harp and trumpet, with Jess and Peterson. A special arrangement for organ and harp by Stefan Kozinski of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dives and Lazarus” will be performed by Bradley and Peterson.

The second half of the show will also include “Two Eastern Pictures” by Gustaf Holtz, featuring the women’s chorus.

Kendall Feeney will also be featured on piano, and Tracy Dunlop on violin. , DataTimes MEMO: This sidebar appeared with the story: IT’S A CELEBRATION “Brahms: A Celebration” will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Cathedral, Grand Boulevard at 12th.
