Knight faces fine or suspension

The Big Ten has given Indiana the option of either suspending coach Bob Knight for a game or paying a $10,000 fine, according to media reports Wednesday.

The Herald-Times of Bloomington, Indianapolis television stations and ESPN college basketball specialist Dick Vitale all reported the details, citing unnamed sources.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany declined Wednesday to specify what action the league has taken against Knight for his comments about officiating during last week’s Indiana-Illinois game.

Indiana has three days to decide whether to appeal or accept the findings, meaning that Knight will be on the Indiana bench today night when the Hoosiers begin the Big Ten Conference tournament.

The Herald-Times reported that the Big Ten cited Knight for violations of its sportsmanlike conduct code, which includes intentionally inciting participants or spectators to violent or abusive action and publicly unduly criticizing a game official.

Knight called the officiating in Indiana’s loss to Illinois last week “the greatest travesty” he has seen as a college coach.

At Toledo, Ohio, Earl Boykins scored 29 points as the Eagles (20-9) beat the Redhawks (17-12) to win the Mid-American Conference championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
