Arizona Finds Itself At Pauley Pavilion

Arizona was staring at a nine-point deficit, a possible second straight defeat and the likelihood of limping into the NCAA Tournament. It’s not exactly the way defending champs are supposed to arrive at the Big Dance.

Instead the Wildcats will come in roaring. For Saturday they found out not how good they are, but how tough they are.

Down by as many as 15 points in the first half and still trailing by nine with 7:14 left, No. 2 Arizona staged a wild comeback at sold-out Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles to topple No. 19 UCLA 91-87.

The rally was fueled by senior forward Michael Dickerson, who scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half, 11 in the final 5:45.

“Michael Dickerson was the difference today,” UCLA coach Steve Lavin said. “He played like a first team All-American, like a player of the year candidate.”

Coming off a stunning overtime loss to USC on Thursday, which snapped their 19-game winning streak, the Wildcats (27-4, 17-1) seemed destined to lose their second straight. UCLA stormed to a 10-0 lead and dominated the opening half.

Arizona whittled away at the lead until taking over in the final 7 minutes of the second half. Arizona gained its first lead of the game with 1:38 remaining when center A.J. Bramlett followed a Mike Bibby miss to give his team an 86-85 advantage.

At Los Angeles, senior guard Gary Johnson scored a career-high 32 points and Elias Ayuso added a career-high 25 as the Trojans squashed the Sun Devils and likely their NCAA Tournament hopes.

The Trojans had lost seven straight games and 11 of 12 before upsetting No. 2 Arizona 91-90 in overtime Thursday night.

Bobby Lazor led the Sun Devils with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jeremy Veal, ASU’s leading scorer with a 23.3-point average, was held to four points - all on free throws.

At Stanford, Calif., Arthur Lee had 27 points and 10 assists as the Cardinal defeated the injury-plagued Beavers.

Oregon State was missing leading scorer Corey Benjamin, sidelined with an abdominal strain. The Beavers lost guard Ron Grady for the season in mid-January with a lacerated kidney and bruised ribs.
