Greyhounds’ Run Continues In Seeding Game

District 7 2A

The Pullman girls basketball team continued its run of beating ranked teams, defeating sixth-ranked Riverside 34-28 Saturday on the final day of the District 7 2A basketball tournament at Mt. Spokane High School.

The Greyhounds (12-13) earned the second seed into the state tournament. The Rams (17-5) will travel as the third seed to state, beginning Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.

In the second game of the night, Chewelah advanced as the No. 2 seed for the boys with a 49-42 win over Medical Lake, which takes the third seed.

“We’re coming of age,” said Pullman coach Jack Brossman.

The Greyhounds managed two points in the first quarter, but rebounded in the second to take a one-point lead into the intermission. It was a lead they still held at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Then Pullman figured out it needed to get the ball into Christa Brossman’s hands.

After scoring only four points the previous three quarters, Brossman rattled off eight consecutive points as Pullman went on a 10-2 run to finish the game.

“We’re so perimeter-oriented,” said Riverside coach Chris Wren, “when we don’t hit (outside) shots we’re in trouble.”

The Rams hit 22 percent of their shots, including 2-20 from behind the 3-point arc.

Christa Brossman finished with a game-high 12 points and Jamie Rydbom contributed seven rebounds and five assists.

Bernice Stime finished with 11 points, four steals and two assists for Riverside.

“After getting killed last night,” said Jack Brossman of their 62-35 loss to Lakeside, “we needed to play well and get some confidence. “I think we have a good shot (at state),” he continued. “We may continue to be a Cinderella team.”
